Kitchens of distinction was a seminal nineties indie band, variously described as 'criminally underrated' (Q Magazine), 'one of the great forgotten groups of the early nineties' (Careless Talk) and 'transporting' (Uncut).
Kitchens' moment was a brief one: at the begininning of the '90s they were critical favourites in the UK and their status as college radio darlings across the pond lead to healthy sales for sophomore album Strange Free World - but their influence remains. Radiohead's Subterranean Homesick Alien is basically fiery final album Cowbys and Aliens distilled (Jonny Greenwood acknowledges the influence of guitarist Julian Swales), and Patrick's complex, allusive lyrics spoke groundbreakingly about life as an unreconciled gay man.
The band comprised:
Patrick Fitzgerald (vocals/bass)
Julian Swales (guitar)
Dan Goodwin (drums)
